Hi, my name is Melina. I live in Arcadia, CA and I have one year essential caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because since I was 17 I worked in a senior citizens facility and I just love the environment. I love learning from the clients, and I wanted to become a caregiver for really that one-on-one interaction with the client.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be patience and cooperation with the client. And always move at the client's pace. Always ask them questions, but not too many if they're suffering from any mental issues. You don't want to just bombard them with questions and have them think too fast and about too many things. Definitely just keep at their pace and ask them questions and just make sure that they're happy and in no pain.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Isabel, 90 years old with dementia. And it was her birthday and her family could not come and visit her because they live in San Diego, quite away. And I felt really sad for her so I decided to bring her some birthday gifts. I knew that she needed a shoehorn because we lost it, and putting on her shoes in the morning was a task. And then, I brought her cake and baloons and flowers. And I think, it really just brightened her day, made it so much more special for her. I don't think she'll forget it. I loved seeing the smile on her face and I'm sure her family appreciated it too that I could be there for her and celebrate her birthday with her since they couldn't come because they live so far away. And I will just always remember that day and how happy she was, and it felt really good.
