Hi, my name is Merlande. I live in San Leandro, CA. I have been a caregiver for six years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I just enjoy working with elder and make a difference in their life. I am a positive person with a positive energy, so when I'm around elderly I like to share that energy with them to make them feel happy and feel like there's somebody that willing to help them with passion, with love, with kind. That's why I become a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a caregiver will be, treat your clients with respect and try the best you can to fulfill their needs and be a positive for them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Charlie. When I met him he was on dialysis. He has high blood pressure and diabetic. He used to stay in his house all the time. He never went out except when he go to dialysis. When I started working for him, I tell him that I am willing to take him to any place that he would like to go. I started taking him to church and also take him to places that elder can have fun. He enjoyed it. He loved it. I was the only one that offered him this type of service because other people, they just come to work and do what they have to do and leave and forget-- it's kind of like they forget that he can have fun, too. But when I came, I made a difference. So a lot of time, I would take him to different places and he had fun and I saw the difference in his life. He became happy and I don't see his sad face any more. Just because he's elder doesn't mean joy is over for him and fun is over for him. I kept him company all the time. And I tell him so often, "Being elder and also having some health issues doesn't mean life is over." So that's why I can't ever forget Charlie.
