Hi, my name is Miakka. I live in Phenix City, AL, which is three miles from Columbus, Georgia. I have been a caregiver for about eight years now.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because initially, my mother was in the caregiving field. I was kind of just looking for a job because I was in the area. However, once I became a caregiver, I just enjoyed the day-to-day contact I have with my residents and my family members. It changes your life. It makes you see things in a whole different perspective. So I've been a caregiver for the last eight years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would definitely be, to be patient and understanding, definitely be kind, and just don't rush things. Take your time. People are sensitive and the slightest thing that you might do or imply could be taken the wrong way. Just enjoy the moment and put yourself in that person's shoes, who you are providing care to.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client that I had at the last nursing facility that I worked at. This client was about 98 years old. But she was so full of life. I enjoyed every moment I had with her. When I can, I would work my four-day rotation and then I'd be off for two days, and when I come back, she'd be so upset even though I had told her that, "I'm off for two days." But when I would come back, she would be so upset because I didn't see her for those two days. So I really just enjoy just spending time with her, watching TV, talking, or sharing popcorn together.
