Hi, my name is Michaeline. I live in Santa Fe Springs, CA and I have been a caregiver for over ten years.
How did you get into caregiving?
Yes, I became a caregiver for a loved one. My mother, whom I took care of for well over ten years, and she had been given stage of dementia that increased through the years. I also had a business where I worked with convalescent homes and also senior citizens and skilled nursing. And I have found that I enjoyed really truly caring and love working in this industry helping individuals with their needs.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient and compassionate. To listen as much as you can to what the patient is saying because in that short time that they're talking there is an opening for them to trust you. Then they will let you assist them, helping them. It does take time, but patience is real important and caring.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget named Pat. Swas in skilled nursing home for several years, and I've known her for several years. And we always when we saw each other we would hug and she would tell me a lot of things going on there and also with her family. I enjoyed talking with her and so forth, and loved hearing her stories. She was a really interesting woman, and I also got to meet her family. Her family also, we got along just great, and they like me, and I really liked them. They would talk to me about past and her situation. She went through a lot of difficult times with surgery and so forth and really was struggling all the time. But I connected with her, and she would feel not just comfortable but she trusted me. It was such a honor to have that type of trust, and patience. I trust her tremendously.
