Hi, my name is Michelle. I live in Ceres, CA and I've been a caregiver for 15-plus years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother had gotten sick and she needed help taking care of herself, so I got into private care and just followed through with it from there. I enjoy working with the elderly and caring for them and giving them companionship and just helping them in any way that I can.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, just have lots of patience, understanding. Listen to the residents that they're caring for, and just be real clear on what it is that they need help with and understanding of what they're going through and just paying attention to them and being as gentle and helpful as you physically possibly can.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Dorothy. She was just a wonderful old lady. She had a great personality. She had a really good sense of humor. I would read to her daily and she really enjoyed it. She loved telling stories of the history of her life and where she came from and places she had been, and it was just a delight to listen to her. And you know, she was always happy, no matter how much pain or what she was going through, she just always had a really positive outlook everything, and it was just amazing to be around people like that.
