Hi, my name is Michelle. I live in Phoenix, Arizona. I've been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mom was a caregiver all her life, and my passion for taking care of people came from me growing up seeing my mom taking care of people since I was a little girl.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to pay attention to the client that you're caring for. Learn what they like and what they dislike. Most elderly people don't like being told what to do, so you have to be able to relate to them, and make them comfortable with who you are, so that they can feel comfortable with you taking care of them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Marjorie. She was paralyzed from the waist down, so she was in a wheelchair. She required total care, and our personalities matched perfectly. We got along very well. We were together almost all the time. We were like best friends, became best friends, and I loved being able to care for this lady, and she recently passed away.
