Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Mikaele, but they always call me Mike. I live in San Bruno city and I have been caregiving for 15 years. I became a caregiver because I like to help elderly people, sick people, and I always did that back home before I came to America.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The first person that comes to my mind is my mom. She's 96 and she has been bedridden for 1 1/2 years. So I take care of her. What I admire most about my mom is that she's a really caring woman. She loves everybody. That's why I love my mom the most, because she's so good. She teaches me, and that's why I like to be a caregiver now.
What piece of advice would you give to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to know this job is not easy. You have to be a very nice and soft hearted person, because you are taking care of elderly people. Mostly you have to be patient. If you are not a patient person, I think you should not be a caregiver.
What is your proudest moment as a caregiver?
I learn a lot by working with other families. I like to become part of the family, so we can work together to help the clients. Those are the best moments for me, because it connects me with people.
