Hi, my name is Monique, and I live in San Antonio, TX and I've been a caregiver for seven years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because sometimes the elderly don't have the love, the care, the companion, the trustworthy, and they don't have anyone, and I love what I do. My grandmother was real sick and back then, I didn't' know a lot of things about it, and then when my grandmother got real, real sick I actually went and applied for a home health job to see how things could work out for her, and I started doing home health for her and ever since then I just loved taking care of the elderly, to be there for companionship, you can talk to them, you can help them cook, clean. You can be like another family member to them.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, beyond kind, love your job before you actually apply, because being a caregiver sometimes a lot of people just apply for job, and they don't know or it's not what they want, but if you have a passion for helping the elderly, this home health will be the perfect job for you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is this nice little lady. She treated me like family. I treated her like family. We got along great and she was just sweet. I mean, she talked about her life stories, and I learned so much from her, and I really miss her.
