Hello, my name is Monique. And I live in San Franciso, CA. And I have been a caregiver for three years, going on four years now.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had my great grandmother and I took care of her. Helping her get her medication. Just making sure she ate. She had her daily meals. Making sure she took a shower. So, I started taking care of her maybe around 13. And making sure that she was getting everything done. So since then, I've always had an interest in helping the elderly.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have patience and to be understanding about their situation, because the elderly have a lot of things going on with them. So you've got to be real positive. Show a positive attitude. And be really patient with them because they might be some days where they don't feel too good. And so you've got to be there, kind of making them happy. So that's the thing I would give. The advice I would give to a new caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget her name was Peggy. From the bat, we had a good connection. She would always ask me how my day was going. Ask me how my older son was and how was his school. And what did I do over the weekend. So she was pretty much just wondering how I was doing. I would take her out to do her daily things she needed to do. We were always talking.
