Hi, my name is Myeisha Alexander and I live in Oakland, CA and I've been a caregiver for four years.
How did you get into caregiving?
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I became a caregiver because I remember when I was in fourth grade and my grandfather started having a lot of health complications and all the steps that had to be done to have him living comfortably at home. And so, because of that, I just always remember that. If I get to help someone live comfortably in their own home, then I'm doing a great deed because everyone deserves to live a life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be just to make sure you listen to your client. Make sure that you're doing everything possible that they want in a safe and healthy way so that they don't feel like they're being controlled by anyone because they're not wanting that. They don't want to live in a facility. They don't want to live in a hospital because of those reasons. So just respect them, listen, and if what they're asking for isn't hurting them or anyone else then try your best to accommodate them.
A client I would never forget is Jarissa because she wasn't too demanding. She wanted to relax. She wanted to have fun. She wanted to get out and go. And everything that she wanted to do was very fun and exciting, and it was great that she wanted to do those things and I was so proud to take her to do those things that she wanted to do.
