Hi my name is Nacheal. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I have been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my great-grandmother had cancer. I end up taking care of her and learning from her hospice workers with me doing all of that. I love actually being able to help people. So I went ahead and became a caregiver full-time, which I have been doing for the last three years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, you're taking care of someone else's family. And that's helping them with a lot. Knowing that you're helping that family is taking a lot off their plate. It can be overwhelming with them taking care of their loved ones as well. The communication between the families and you, it helps that person feel comfortable knowing that their family is in the right hands.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, her name was Dory. She was paralyzed from the waist down and she also was blind. She was only 44, so it made life seem a little bit difficult. But what we used to do is I would be in the kitchen cooking and cleaning and we would listen to music. She would listen to me sing older music, I guess you would say. With that, she used to always say how it brightened up her day because I used to just be in the kitchen singing like it was just a normal place that I lived and it wasn't actually me working for her. So it made her feel more comfortable in her home.
