Hi, my name is Nicole. I live in Beaumont, TX and I've been a caregiver for 14 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I found out I was pregnant with my first child. My cousin brought it to my attention. I thought it would be a great thing to do, so I took the Nursing Assistant course at Lamar Continuing Education here in Beaumont and it's very good thing for me. And I love what I do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be very attentive to the patient, listen to the patient. Be kind, courteous. Treat the patient as you would want someone to treat you, and to also get to know them as a person.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget would be Elaine. She had not long lost her husband and was looking for companionship, so the family decided to get someone to come out, help her around the house, and be a companion. Watch television with her, hold conversations. Do light cooking and cleaning. And she was just so sweet, she would be happy to see me every time I would go, I'd be happy to see her. She would give me a hug, I would hug her back and we always had a good time together. She was a client and I was the caregiver but she was also a friend.
