Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Nicole and I live in Daly City, California. The reason I got into caregiving is because I wanted to become a nurse. but I wanted to volunteer first to make sure that it was the right career for me. I liked the volunteering part so I decided to go into a CNA program at the City College of San Francisco. I finished that course and then I was able to get a job with the registry and I started working on different floors as a CNA.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I met a wonderful lady while working at the hospital and her family was just great. They really liked me so they asked if I could work for them after she got discharged. I took the offer and I was with her for four years.
What did you enjoy about taking care of her?
I would take her to see the Academy of Sciences when it was brand new and she really loved it. I took her to the opera sometimes. I enjoyed taking care of her on a daily basis, just being with her. Her husband passed away, so sometimes around holidays she would cry because she was reminiscing about her and her husband. She would tell me all about their wonderful marriage. When she cried I would hold her hand and let her express to me what she wanted to express until she was fine again.
What sort of medical education do you have?
I graduated from a CNA program and then applied to nursing school. I graduated from nursing school in May of 2014. I have a BLS certification, ACLS, and PALS. ACLS is Advanced Cardiac Life Support and then PALS is Pediatric. I have also taken an EKG course. I am currently working on a stroke certification.
