Hello. My name is Nikki. I live in Sacramento, CA and I have 10 years caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my step-mother was a registered nurse and I provided respite care for her patients and for the family members of the patients that needed a break. I was trained by home health aides that worked for different home care agencies and I've had over ten years of experience. I do it because I'm very compassionate and it's not a job for me it's more of a passion in life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice my to a new caregiver would be to definitely take your time and be patient with each individual because each individual has a different experience happening. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and overall just treat them as you'd want to be treated if you were in their situation.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I never will forget is Gordon. He was an 80-year-old man who had a severe stroke and wasn't able to speak very clearly. I spent two weeks with him during my sophomore year in high school while his wife went on a family reunion trip. And I was able to work with him and when his wife got home he was able to say, "I love you." And it was very amazing for both the patient, Gordon, myself, and his wife. Very rewarding.
