Hi, my name is Noemi. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I have been a caregiver for six years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandparent. There was a point in time where my grandfather was having heart problems and he was hospitalized. The whole family came together, of course, and because of everybody's busy schedule, we were taking turns taking care of my grandpa and taking him to doctor appointments, etc., etc., but as a granddaughter, and at the time, I was just going to school so I had extra time, I kept helping out as much as I could, and I noticed that I had a passion for it. I wanted to help, and I found that I was very good at it as well, and that's how it all started for me.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to care for others as you would care for your loved ones. In caregiving, I've found that if you put your heart and your soul into your work, things are done much better, and if taken into consideration, you feel like you've done something extraordinary and you've given back. That's why it's so rewarding for me to be a caregiver for others because I know I can be of great help.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Shirley. I will never forget the one time she told me that I was like a daughter to her. It went from having the relationship as a caregiver to one of a daughter relationship. I worked for her for over a year and a half, and it was an amazing time. I got to know them personally. Spend a lot of time with them. Her and her family.
