Hi! My name is Ofa. I live in Oakland, CA. And I've been a caregiver for 20 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was inspired for taking care of my grandma. I cared for her until the last years of her life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to provide care to your patients as if you are providing care to your own family members, like your own mother or grandmother. And that is the best care you can provide to your patients.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Tish. She was a very smart person. She didn't have any memory problem. She was very sharp, and she was in her 80's. I cared for her because she had to be fed through G-tube. And her problem was her pneumonia, she was on oxygen. I provided the care she needed. We would watch TV, watched certain shows at a certain time. We laughed together. We talked about her childhood, and we exchanged memories. When she passed away, it felt like losing a mother or a grandmother. For a long time, I couldn't watch those specific shows that we used to watch.
