Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Ofa and I live in Richmond, California. I have 20 years of experience as a caregiver. I love doing this kind of work. It's my calling in life to help the disabled or elderly with their needs at home. I decided to be a caregiver after I took care of my own grandmother when she was in bed sick and she needed help. I used to take care of her needs by preparing her meals, helping her dress, and taking her to her appointments. This made me realize I would like to do the same for others.
What advice would you give to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to have plenty of love in your heart. Whatever you do, if you have love in your heart, then you can help others. Be kind, reliable, honest, and be willing to help whenever needed.
What makes you a good caregiver?
I try to be kind, patient, respectful, and honest. I always try to take care of others like I did my own grandmother. I would say I'm proud of my work as a caregiver when I'm in a situation where my client is treating me badly. I have to know and understand that I'm caring for a sick person. I don't take anything personally. I remember: "This is a sick person and their illness is what is making them act like that." I am loving and accepting of however they are acting. That is a proud moment.
