Hi, my name is Ololade. I live in Gilroy, CA and I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I am very compassionate to people, especially the elderly, and I took care of my grandmother. And I also worked at a nursing home for five years and taking care of them makes me happy. Making their environment comfortable, helping with their ADLs, helping them with ambulation, and making them happy.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, if you know you're not passionate about the elderly, don't do it. Or if you're passionate, you're patient, you can listen to them, you can make their environment comfortable, you can be a good person that they can talk to, and you can actually make them happy, then that's something that you should do. But the major advice is, you have to be very patient, and you have to be able to listen to them to make them happy because that's the major thing you need. And make their environment comfortable. Just make them happy. That's my advice.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a lady I took care of. She was always moody and I couldn't really get through to her. I didn't know that she loved music because she couldn't really communicate properly. And I noticed that everytime her son came to see her, he played those old music, and I saw she was smiling a little bit. So, I asked for those songs and maybe I would try and play those songs everytime I would go there to make her happy.
