Hi, my name is Palina. I live in Visalia, CA and I have approximately 10 years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my dad had opened up a care home when I was in my early teens. They lived with us, they became part of our family.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to only if they really have an interest for caring for the needs and the quality of life for whom they are caring for. Unless they have that desire, to just not even get interested in it, go that route. There's a lot of abuse out there, and it takes a special person to be a caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Bogey. Bogey always liked to water the garden. It was always Bogey's chore to water the garden. And when he was acting out, we would take the garden privileges away. We would sit down and have a talk with him and explain to him. Again, he was mentally challenged. He was an older man, though. And he would stand at his doorway and go, "Bogey can't water the garden." I would always go talk to him and go, "Bogey, you got to do your chores. You got to brush your teeth, you got to take your shower, you got to eat. He just wanted to water the garden. That was all he wanted to do. So, it was kind of a challenge some days to really get him motivated to do the things he needs to do for himself. And he gets to water the garden. So, he's my most memorable one.
