Hello, my name is Priscila. I live in San Pedro, CA and I have been a caregiver for about a year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I have taken care of my grandparents as well as the mother of one of my friends. I became a caregiver because my grandfather was sick and he needed someone to take care of him. As well as my mother, she took care of him and I helped her. Ever since that my mom has been taking care of elderly people as well and we have taken care of a family friend. Her name was Irene, until she passed away.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be loving, caring, sympathetic, patient, and to be understanding, to try to understand what it is that the person you're caring for wants, what they need and to basically try to make their day better. Do little things that will make them feel happier or be creative with their food if they can't eat processed like chunks of meat. Try to make it fun or exciting so people don't feel down. Maybe read different activities that can help brighten someone's day.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Irene. I won't forget her because after caring for her she felt like family. Just being with her and spending time with her from watching TV to helping her organize her closet, to cooking for her, feeding her, going on walks with her, I connected with her. It's pretty hard when she passed away. It almost feels like it's my own grandmother and so I will never forget Irene.
