Hi, my name is Priscilla. I live in Banning, CA and I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my mom. She's been a CNA for as long as I could remember, and I've always looked up to her. She taught me patience, compassion, and understanding that it's okay to need help with the elderly, or anyone for that matter. I guess the best feeling is when I'm able to help in any way possible and to make their lives a little easier. The elderly always have interesting life stories that they like sharing. That's one big reason why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would definitely be to stay informed, to keep learning, and to know safe ways to care for their client like proper body mechanics. And also, a smile goes a long way. To always be understanding and a good listener, and to definitely always respect the client's wishes and boundaries.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is someone I met sometime last year while I was working at a hospital at this time. He was Hispanic and he was completely blind in both eyes. And for some reason, when I first went in to greet him, he was super-kind and just warm. I wanted to treat him the best way that I could. I remember he was always so grateful. He always told me, "Thank you so much for being so nice because I don't always get treated like this. I don't always get the respect that I want." So he thanked me for respecting him.
