Hi, my name is Raby. I've been a caregiver for seven years, and I live in Lakewood, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was going through nursing school and one of my friends asked me to care for her dad and I took good care of him for a while because he was in hospice. When he died, I applied with the agency that I worked for six years and I had a lot of experience and it inspired me to continue as a caregiver because I love taking care of people and I enjoy my job and also I enjoy being around people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be have a lot of patience and don't take anything personal. Continue taking care of them because you are there to help them, to care for them. You'll get a lot of good response, a lot of good blessing from doing that. Have a lot of patience with the clients.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
Client I will never forget is she had dementia. Maria, she was very nice, kind lady, but when I met her, her dementia was stage one, and she was very kind. And then I work with her for about a year and it got to stage four, and then she became very mean. But even when she was mean, she was very nice to me, and then she laughed sometimes when she become mean, and then she remember, oh, okay. Because I was so kind to her, she would come back to herself. So I really took good care of this lady, and then I became friends with all the family. And I call her sometimes so we can talk, and she's a very nice lady.
