Hi, my name is Ramon. I live in Chula Vista, CA and I've been a caregiver for 6 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my three older sisters, whose age ranges from 76, 82, and 84. They took care of me when I was young back in our home country the Philippines. I have always wanted to work as a caregiver and help the people also here in America by assisting and helping those like Alzheimer's patient on activities of daily living.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, always maintain the attitude of being patient and being flexible. Provide assistance with personal care as needed, but allow your client as much independence as possible. Prevent complications of the mobility, and always use the communication properly. Always bear in mind that we work for the elders and we have to understand every situation that we are into, helping them for their every need.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Rosita. I remember when I was treating her nicely and her behavioral mood changed and she stabbed me while I turned my back. Luckily, I was not seriously harmed and explained to her after that incident why I should not be mad at her. I always keep her safe by respecting her, by saying, "Yes, ma'am, or no, ma'am."
