Hi, my name is Renée. I live in Dallas, TX and I have 10 years of caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I am a passionate person. I love being around people. I love helping people, and I've gained my experience with caregiving through my employment and partly because I've had occasionally family members that may have needed my help because they may have been ill at one point in their lives.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to make sure that you show compassion to another person and also make sure that you're doing it because it's something that you want to do not just because it's a job. It has to come from your heart. Even though you may be trained no one can train you to be compassionate. That has to come from inside. And make sure whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability and make sure you do a good job at what you do and be open to corrective criticism.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client that I most recently met, and I am his caregiver. He is a person who cannot walk and there are several things that he cannot do for himself, but he is very appreciative. And the most thing that he appreciates about me is that I'm willing to listen to him although it may take him a while to get whatever out that he's trying to communicate, yet he certainly appreciates me listening to him and someone to be able to hear what he has to say and not being dictated to all of the time because he has a disability.
