Hi, my name's Renita. I live in Hawthorne, CA and I've been a caregiver for ten-plus years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was 15-years-old, my dad had got ill and I took half the responsibility with my mom and took care for him. After he passed away in 1999, I also helped to care for my siblings, my mother and my aunt that was also passing away due to cancer. I've always enjoyed helping others and I appreciate the enthusiasm I get from helping someone.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always have patience, speak clearly and loudly and to be prepared in positive attitude when dealing with any situations in your client's behavior.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget was a lady named Susan. I was there to provide care for her and her husband. Her husband was on hospice and she had been in the house for the last year, not going anywhere or anything. When I came in, I brought happiness, companionship and reliability to her. I made her feel comfortable, where she actually went out after over a year of being in a home with her husband and she enjoyed herself with her female friends having dinner. When she came back, we enjoyed a lovely night playing cards, her husband also enjoyed the time that he had with her and I could see on his face the love and compassion he had for her. It was a truly lovable couplee enjoyed a whole month and a half together of nothing but happiness and bliss. Very, very lovely couple.
