Hi! My name is Ricky. I live in San Antonio, TX, and I've been a caregiver/personal aide for about 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy helping seniors in a home setting, as well as in facilities like assisted living because I started helping my mother and different relatives that were a senior level in age live a better quality of life through minimal assistance. So that's why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be to come in there with compassion. You never come in there with personal problems. You leave that at home and outside, and always be prepared to help.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is called The Colonel. He was in an assisted living and no one could go with him, so I started treating him in a capacity what he enjoyed all his life in the military up to late in his age. So we gained a military routine. We started doing what he'd like for me to do that no one else would do, and that's tell him, "We got mess hall at 0600, sir," and reporting to him like that, and he'd just enjoy it. After that, we just started talking about golf and we found common interests that bond us together.
