Hi, my name is Roberta. I have been a caregiver for 4 years and I live in Cincinnati, OH
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother. I used to take care of her as the youngest in the family. I love the job. I keep telling myself that I am going to be a nurse in the future.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
Patience. Try to be as patient as possible and try to not to let your client feel like they can't do anything. Involve her in activities, give her options when it comes to meals and let her feel you love her and that you are part of the family. Let her feel that you are not just there to work, do whatever you have to do and get out.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I will never forget Joan. When I first started with her she was very thin, she had gangrene, she couldn't sit up in her wheelchair and she couldn't go outside. I think about her because through the years I spent with her, she improved so much. I'm still in touch with the family. Her daughters call me and we chat even though I have relocated. She is doing so great - her gangrene is gone. She is a client I will never forget because I have had a huge impacted by making her feel better and that makes me happy.
