Hi, my name is Rosalinda and I live in Baldwin Park, Los Angeles, CA and I have been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver starting with my father who got sick with stroke, and I took care of him. And next thing that happened was my husband, who was a cancer patient, and I took care of him also for a period of two years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to be compassionate, positive thinking, and empathy to patients. Should be able to communicate with them effectively and show them a genuine interest and display empathy and caring for them. Should be very supportive too and the ability to make independent decisions, and the ability to deal tactfully with their families, and on difficult situation as well. Should also understand the concept of medication reminders and meet the general health requirements as well. And be able to work throughout the day with them. That's all.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The most memorable patient that I had, her name is Joleta. She was a cancer patient and she also developed a heart problem, and she had a stroke too. I took care of her, helped her in all her needs and I did her cooking, laundry, respiration assistance. She was on oxygen and I dress her and fed her through the feeding tube. For her oral hygiene and grooming as well, and doing her skin care and respiration assistance as well. She developed a closeness to me and she developed love and I did love her too. It was so sad when she passed away. I was beside her and I prayed for her as well.
