Hi, my name is Rubyann. I live in Santa Clara, CA and I've been a caregiver for over 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had a sick father who needed my care, took his vital signs. I took care of him mostly all my life. He passed away so I had the desire to take care of other people that are sick and that's where my passion is at, to help others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be do everything with love, treat others the way you would treat your loved ones. It takes a special person to take care of somebody who's in need, so you have to have a heart. When you do things, do it with love and with passion. Do it with a passion and a passionate heart. It is a rewarding job.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is the one that when I was taking care of her, she looked out the window and she see mountains and she said, "Oh, if I could only climb that mountain one more time." Because of her age, she wasn't able to-- she had less mobility. She didn't have much mobility in her legs, she was showing signs of Parkinson's. I didn't say much because I didn't-- there was no words in which someone who can't really move around much anymore. But when they were totally active before and all you could just do is just sit there and comfort them and take them for a walk afterwards, that I will never forget. It encouraged me to do more with my life that I'm able to move my legs and to travel and do more because there's going to be a time when we're not going to be able to move, so it kind of broke my heart.
