Hi! My name is Sabrina. I live in Monrovia, California, and I've been a caretaker for less than a year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was younger I lived with my great grandmother and around the age of 16, I started helping her around the house because she had COPD and severe emphysema so she couldn't do too much for herself. I was the one helping her shower, giving her medicine, changing her oxygen tanks. Because of her, I wanted to help other people be able to take care of themselves as well.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always be compassionate to the person you're giving care to. Always listen to what their needs are and to see if they're comfortable. Always trying to help the person even if they're not able to help themselves and being nice, talking to them, listening to them. It shows that you care and it makes them feel a lot better about themselves even if they're not able to do much.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget is Opal. She always cared for others, always wanting to make others happy before herself. Even though she was not able to do much for herself, it didn't matter. She only cared about others and their happiness. And because of that, she showed me what it is to take care of someone even if you don't know them, even you've barely met them. It makes a point that caring for others and showing your compassion means a lot.
