Hi, my name is Saija. I live in San Leandro, CA and I have been a caregiver for 1 year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because someone that was close to me and my family had a stroke, and they were paralyzed on one side. So I decided that I should care for them, and the year of me caring for them made me really want to do more for people with disabilities, or people who are less fortunate and can't help theirself as much as others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to treat the patient like they're your family member. Treat the patient how you would want to be treated. Give them your all. Be patient, and do everything out of love. Just take your time, and love what you're doing, and do everything with a lot of passion, and let the client know that you really care for them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I will never forget is named Regina. She was paralyzed on one side, and her spirit was just outgoing. She was loving. And she was really down one day. So I went over there and I just decided to take her somewhere fun. The laugh and joy on her face was just memorable.
