Hi, my name is Sally. And I live in Hurst, TX. I have been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver with my 10-year-old daughter. She is special needs. So, I have learned a lot from her. I've also helped other families here in the Keller area for respite programs, to take care of their special needs children as well as their older or family member that have a different medical background.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, you have to always think about how they feel. You have to be calm. Have a lot of patience. Some clients are nonverbal. My daughter is nonverbal. So, I know she does get frustrated at times because I'm not figuring out what she needs at that moment. So she does get frustrated. And I have learned myself.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The clients I will never forget, my grandma and my grandpa. Both of them have passed away. But just growing up and watching them with all their medical background, it was very difficult to see that. But I learned so much from the caregivers and just growing up to help them with their needs.
