Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Salote. I live in San Mateo and I've been a caregiver for almost 14 years. I became a caregiver because I like it. Traditionally, on the Island, we of take care of elderly people until they pass away.
What do you enjoy about being a caregiver?
I like meeting people with different ways of living and cultures.
What advice do you have for a new caregiver?
I think it's important for the caregiver to be on time, have lots of patience, and to be happy. If you are happy, the patient will be happy. If you are not in a good mood, the patient will be in a bad mood. So you make sure to be happy.
Tell us about your most memorable client
I used to work with two clients-- first it was just the wife and then the husband got sick so it included Mr. and Mrs. I really liked them because I used to take them anywhere they wanted and they told me, "You cook anything you want, we'll eat it." So I cooked anything and they liked it. I really liked them because they were open and told me what they wanted to eat and where they wanted to go. I was with them for a few years.
