Hi. My name is Sanda Hernandez. I live in Pittsburgh, and I have four years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver due to a loved one, which is my grandma, she has dementia. So it's really hard to take care of people with dementia. And working for this lady, her name was Selwa, for two years, she also inspired me for working more and more for caring for seniors, loving them, learning more experience every day, hands on, transferring. It just helps and helps. And I love working with seniors all the time.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver is to have the patience to have fun with what you're doing, to take it easy. There's no rush. Just go slow by slow, you learn quicker. Just enjoy what you're doing. And if you need help on anything, there's always teamwork. And every day you learn new tasks, so just keep going.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I would never forget, her name is Selwa. She inspired me, she kept me going. I would always want to go to work. I was with her 14 hours a day. They gave me a room to stay there if I wanted to stay. She inspired me by always looking into my eyes and smiling, goofing around. I was always with her, 24/7, just hands on with her, always by her side, always went to go dinners, parties. Her friends loved me. They thought I was actually their granddaughter. She was really a wonderful lady. I would never, ever will forget her.
