Hi, my name is Sandy. I live in Cincinnati, OH and I have been a caregiver for 13 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my family members. I started taking care of my niece. She needs total care. She is a quadriplegic. I have taken care of her. I have taken care of my grandmother who has had diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. And also I've taken care of my dad. He had lung cancer, and I took care of him until he passed away.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to really enjoy your job and to ask yourself the reason why you got into the field not only for financial reasons but also to really encourage and be of help to your client. And also their family members, being a support to the client's family. That would be my advice that I would give to a new caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will forget her first name is Joan. I was her caregiver for eight years. I cared for her Monday through Friday for eight years, and I looked forward to seeing her every day, and it was very hard when she passed away, but she did have grown children, and sometimes they were busy with their own lives and working, and they didn't have as much time as they would like to spend with her, but I was always there.
