Hi, my name is Sara. I live in Aliso Viejo, CA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have a compassionate heart and I like watching people grow and be successful. I also had some family with health issue and that just gave me the extra push to really dive in and make a difference to people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver would be to absolutely go in and treat them how you would want to be treated, treat them with the dignity and respect that everybody deserve but I would also say, you have to remember that this is your job and that you do have to put your life first and just always keep that at a balance.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my buddy Trevor. There was one day, shortly after his grandpa had died, that he came up to me super upset and I told him that I could relate because I had just lost my mother and he looked at me and he said "You did?" and I said "Yeah." and we talked for a minute and by the time I left, he was laughing. Then a few months later, he came into the office with his case worker and he runs up to me and he tells the lady, "That's her. That's Sara. That's the one." then he gave me a hug and he goes, "I love her, she really helped me when I lost my grandpa." It was just the best thing because it showed me that I really made a difference even though to me it wasn't a huge deal because I had forgotten about the situation but to him it meant the world.
