Hi, my name is Sarah. I live in Houston, TX and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I saw how my grandmother was treated in a nursing home. And I did not like it. And I knew how she should be treated. So, my other grandmother, I took care of her the last three years of her life. And I treated her the way I thought our elders should be treated, with respect and compassion.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, make sure that your heart is in it and that you're being a caregiver for the right reason, that you're compassionate and you treat whoever your patient is just like their family members would treat them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my grandma, Margaret. She was 83 years old. I was her caregiver for the last three years of her life. We became very close in the last three years. And I remember one time because I would be on Facebook and she would ask about it, and one time she was sad about being a little lonely and getting a little depressed. So I brought it up to her, well, maybe we should work to see if any of your friends from high school are still living and we can contact them and Facebook them. And you could talk to them, you won't be so lonely. And we did that. And we actually found about four of her friends that were still living.
