Hi. My name is Selina Martinez. I live in Dallas, TX and I have been a caregiver for 8 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my father became ill with heart failure and kidney failure and I began taking care of him. And I feel, personally, that this is my calling and that my heart is truly in it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be you have to know how to make the patient comfortable. This could be your mother, this could be your father, this could be your grandparent. You have to want to do this.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I would never forget is Levada. She is just a wonderful person. We had such a wonderful bond. She was so welcoming, she was so giving. Every time I would go see her she opened the door with open arms. We sat down when it was time, she watched her news, CNN, and we would sit and she'd try to offer me snacks. And I would tell her, " You know, I'm fine" but she wanted to make sure I ate something. She had this warm, motherly heart.
