Hi, my name is Selina. I live in Pittsburg, CA and I've been a caregiver for 2 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had the opportunity to work and help with the Red Cross during a civil war in my country. I love doing the job because it is a very rewarding job helping people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be that when you become a caregiver, you have to make sure your mind, your heart is in the work because it can be a very challenging job. You have to love what you do to be able to be effective at the job that you do.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mrs. J. Mrs. J was a 91 year old female who was a client of mine that was very mean and didn't want to talk to anybody. Little did I know that she was mean because she had just lost her husband. She had no family left and she was depressed. As I gave Mrs. J love and care and attention, Mrs. J opened up to me and told me how much she appreciated how I care for her and that reminded her of when her husband was alive. So Mrs. J became a very good friend of mine and she always looked forward to seeing me coming to work and I always looked forward to going to work. Mrs. J and I became more like a mother and daughter. I love her as she loves me. That was for me one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
