Hi, my name is Shaela. I live in Salinas, CA. And I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandfather had dementia and that just made me want to help others with dementia. And just anyone who needed any care or help because it makes me feel better knowing I'm helping someone with any problems they have or any help they need.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient. And always be positive. Don't ever make them feel like they're doing something wrong. Or don't make them feel uncomfortable. Just make them feel happy and at home, whether they're at home or not.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Arla. She was always so happy. She never let anything get to her. She was just full of life. She passed away about seven months ago. I was sad but there's not really much I can do. She would always be walking around, trying to talk to people. And seeing that, would always make me happy. I don't think I'd ever forget her. She was just a very nice person. I treated her like she was my grandmother, so that's why it was sad when she passed away.
