Hi, my name is Shahn. I now currently reside in the city of Stockton, CA. I have been a care provider for over 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had good experience working with my cousin who was born with cerebral palsy. I worked with her most of her life until she moved to New Jersey due to her physical condition and I enjoy working with people, helping the elderly. I find it very rewarding, very satisfying to help someone in need and knowing that you just made their day just a little bit more brighter. Then I became a caregiver to help others and to be a blessing to others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, learn all you can about caregiving and Alzheimer's, be kind, listen with an open heart, be patient, don't rush people. When you rush, you tend to run into more problems. Learn to be a very good listener.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mr. William. We called him Bill. He was a tall gentleman who liked to play golf, quiet, watched golf and old movies most of the time, enjoyed eating his donuts and bagels and stuff that he wasn't supposed to eat. He was really a fun person to be around. I enjoyed working with him every day until his passing.
