Hi, my name is Shakia. I live in Sacramento, CA and I have approximately 3 years of experience in caregiving.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother was a mental health counselor for 20 plus years, and everyone loved her and she loved her job. She enjoyed caring for people and being there for an ear to hear, and providing companionship and meeting new people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver would be is to treat every individual, or elderly, or whoever they come across as an individual in who they are. They have special circumstances but that does not make them any different than any other human being. They also need companionship. They need love. They need care. They want to believe and know that somebody cares about them, and they're not forgotten. So definitely engaging and participating with the client to show them that they matter.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is one of my good clients, Darnella. She had Lupus and it was very hard for her to move around. Her body ached a lot. She didn't really want to do much, but she kept a very positive attitude, uplifting, upbeat, and she always enjoyed participating in the home activities that was provided for her, and she really enjoyed my company.
