Hi, my name is Shakiara, and I live in Richmond, CA. I have 10 years of experience in caregiving.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I like giving help to the elderly. I love helping out the elderly. I started off helping my mom and my auntie. My auntie was a dialysis patient. She had kidney failure, and so I would help her and put her on her dialysis machine, cooked for her, cleaned for her, made groceries, helped her bathe, combed her hair. The same thing with my mother, heart failure and overweight, and she needed oxygen all the time. I also had to help her bathe, comb her hair, and cook for her as well, and help her get out of the house and run her errands. I also worked for CAS with autistic client. I just love to help people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to make a relationship between you and your client. Know what your clients like and dislike. Read their IPP chart and if you don't like helping the elderly, then this wouldn't be a job for you. But, unfortunately, if you do like helping people, this would be a great job for you. Always stay with your client. Never leave your client and just make sure you can help them to the best of your abilities.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Jason, he was partially deaf and he was a good client. Like, when I wouldn't bring my lunch over there, he would go to the store and run errands for me. He was a good client, and always made sure his meds were taken. He would make sure that the other clients inside the house would take their meds and that's a big help for me.
