Hello, my name is Shameka and I live in Hemet, Riverside, CA and I have over 13 years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because many years ago, probably in 1991 or 1992, my mother was diabetic and her health was slowly declining, and I'm the only child, so I was able to be there to take care of her. And that's what really inspired me to want to help others in this position. So that's why I'm doing it. And I love doing it. I love helping other people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, whomever you're taking care of, whether it's family member or a client through a job or a resident at a assisted living facility, the most important thing that you can do is to give that person independence. That's the best thing you can give them. They want to be able to feel like they are independent.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget that comes to my mind is a lady called Ruth. She passed away near the end of last month, it's April now. So yeah, she just recently passed away. She lived to be 104, she had all of her teeth, she could see, she could hear, everything. Everything that a person would love to have much younger than her years. She was 104 and she had the most beautiful smile and spirit.
