Hi, my name is Shameka. I live in Dallas. And I've been a caregiver for six years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my father was sick when I was younger and I enjoyed taking care of him and seeing others smile and making them happy. So when I got older, I went into the health care field because I get to do that. And I love interacting with them.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be understanding, patient, loving, caring, but most of all understanding and patient. And you treat them as you want your family members treated. And before you care for a person always ask yourself, "Would I want my family, or my mom, my dad to be treated this way?"
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I remember the most, his name is Bradley. And when I first started working with him they didn't tell me that you have to hide your coffee. So I came in and I was training and I sat my coffee on the table. And everybody was just looking at me like, "Are you sure you want to do that?" And I was like, "Yeah." And so he came out. He's non verbal. So he came out and he seen my coffee cup and before I can get to it he was already drinking it. And I'm looking at him like, "That's mine." And then he handed me the cup like, "Thank you." And every time I drink coffee I just think about him and I just laugh
