Hi, my name is Shaneta. I live in Palmdale, CA and I've been a caregiver for 12 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver-- when I was a kid, my grandmother had to take care of a family members. And just living in the same house with my grandmother, I was able to help her take care of these individuals. And they became a passion for me. And that's the reason why I'm in this field for the past 12 years. The time that I can be able to help assist someone with their daily life, and light housekeeping, and taking them to appointments, even activities-- going out to eat together, just the companionship, made me really know this is something that I'll want to do for the rest of my life. I'm very passionate about my work, and I will get the job done.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver will be, be passionate, be patient, be very respectful. Love what you do.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Sarah. Sarah's a client that always had a big smile on her face. Friendly, warm, welcoming. She made me enjoy my job. There are days that we will go to the park and just look at the beautiful scenery, feed the ducks, be able to walk for a short period of time because she wasn't able to walk for a long period of time. But she made it seem that she can walk for eternity. Sarah's one of my patients that, no matter what I was going through - not bringing my problems to work, but probably down for some reason, - she knew, and she uplifts me and gave me positive affirmation every day. I am blessed that I was a part of Sarah's life. Unfortunately, she passed away two years ago. But I still have a good connection with her family.
