Hi, my name is Shannonlynn. I live in Desert Hot Springs, CA. I have 10 plus years experience as caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother when she was in her 80's, and now she is 97 years old. And I've been through some nursing programs and I love it very much. And I take care of seniors all over the valley of Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, and Palm Desert, and I enjoy what I do for a living. And being a grandmother, I take care of my grandson as a caregiver sometimes, and my mother in-law too. So my grandmother's the one who inspired me to go out to the nursing field as a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be very patient to the seniors and be very loyal to them and give them their dignity. And make sure you understand where they're coming from in their experience by bringing a new caregiver into their home to trust them. It's very hard to trust somebody, that don't know how to be a caregiver and wants to be a caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is somebody that I was working on hospice. I was giving encouragement and falling through life to experience what they had to go through with the loved ones, and what to expect when they're in the process of dying. It's really hard to be a caregiver but you have to really understand what they need when that time comes into death. To me, I had a really good qualifying experience with death and living with life to people.
