Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
Hi, I'm Shanta. I live in Vallejo, California, and I've been a caregiver for over five years. The person inspired me to be a caregiver was my mother because she worked long hours, and she'd always come home, explain how the care was. And it was always so loving talking about how she cared for an elderly person, fed them, bathed them, and just she loved them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Jarrold. I met him and he was such a loving person. He was a hard worker and that downtime was actually very hard on him, so it took a lot for me to help him out and it was excellent. I had to feed him. I had to help with shopping. I had to help with transportation. I had to pretty much [chuckles] do everything - meds - it was just a lot and I really appreciated the experience with him. What I admired most about Jarrold was his personality. He was such a caring, loving person, and a really funny guy. And I loved that I helped him get back to work, and he was so happy with that one.
Tell us about your most challenging client as a caregiver?
What are your strengths as a caregiver?
Most challenging client that I had was a bed-ridden client, and I had to feed, bathe, and cook, and clean, and the amazing part about it was that I enjoyed it, and she did too. We watched movies, watch our favorite TV shows, we'd even look at the newspaper, her old magazines, and pictures, and just old memories. And she enjoyed it, and I did too as well.
What I think makes me a great caregiver is that I am a very loving person and I love to see other people happy and smiling. So my job is done when I see the next person is smiling. What is your proudest moment as a caregiver?
The moments I was most proud of as a caregiver is seeing my client push themselves back into independence. Like going back to work, far as Jarrold. He was able to pick himself back up, and move forward, and get back to work, and didn't need a caregiver anymore.
