Hi, my name is Shantina. I live in Opa-locka, FL. I've been a caregiver for over 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because at an early age I had to take care of my family. It became a passion of mine. I currently work with disabled adults. It's something that I like to do because I love to see people happy. I love to make people smile. I love being able to help someone else, and it's just something that I like to do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to make sure that you treat the person with respect and dignity. Also, being able to just help that person without making them feel lesser than what they already feel. Because you're helping people who need help and no longer are able to do things for their self. So, I feel that you should always respect the person, and make them feel as comfortable and as happy as you would want someone to make you feel.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget her name is Melina. Melina and I are born the same month, different days. And I was taking care of Melina for almost two years and a half, and I can say one thing, she got really attached to me. And I looked at her as one of my little sisters. One day I took Melina to the youth fair, and it was her first time going out there. And it was so amazing because she really enjoyed herself. And she told me that she had a great time with me because I treated her like I was her family.
