Hi, my name is Sharon. I live in Albany, GA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I took care of my family. I had a sick mother who was COD, diabetic, high blood pressure. I had an auntie that had to have surgery that had to have a knee replacement. And I also had cousins and a son that was ADHD, Asperger's, and Autistic, and asthma. So, I became a caregiver starting out with taking care of family.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always make sure that your client is comfortable and relaxed and make sure that they're happy. You're there to help take care of them to make their lives better, easier, simple. Think of them as family. Think of how would you want someone to treat one of your family members and try to make sure that you are treating them that exact same way.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Doug. Doug was a very special client. He was sad a lot when I first started, but after getting to know him he became very excited. Every time I entered his home it was laughs and smiles and hugs. He was very into video games and the newest technology that came out. So, there were times I took him to the game store, introduced him to new games and different little things that he could do to help fill in the gaps throughout the day. Doug became very appreciative of the time I took to research and find new activities and games for him to play. He was always grateful, and that was my most special client because he was always happy when I came.
